Decommissioning is the final phase of oil and gas activities where oil and gas infrastructure is taken down and the site is restored to its original condition (before operations commenced) as far as is possible. This stage typically takes place 20 to 30 years ‘depending on the reserve of the field. Despite its futuristic nature, decommissioning remains a present reality that licensees, contractors and States must face and adequately prepare for.
